Never Underestimate Mobile website design

Do you have a great website, that rocks tons of visitors, builds your e-mailing list like a big beautiful snow ball, and wins awards for being a great site full of great content?  Awesome!  But did you know that nowadays, a great web site is only part of your online strategy to turn all your prospects into repeat clients?  By that, I mean that in this world where almost every cell phone can go online, you have NO choice but to honor the fact that some people can have a rich online experience every single day… without ever even owning a computer.  People can watch TV, play online games, watch stupid YouTube videos (and even ones that aren’t so stupid) – wouldn’t it be sweet if your web site was an easy, enjoyable part of their phone-based online experience?  There is absolutely no reason why it can’t be, or why it shouldn’t be.  But when you practice mobile web site design, keep some things in mind:

1. A computer screen is much larger than a phone screen.

While this is obvious, a lot of times mobile web site designers just don’t think about this while they’re producing code, or applying images.  Could you imagine how annoying it would be to try to look at a 2,000 x 1,500 pixel image… on a 200 x 300 pixel screen (the industry standard, as I write this)?  It’d be like navigating across a map!  Unless you want to seriously turn off people, keep images to a minimum… and keep them small.

2. Make sure the pages are coded in XML.

XML is a much more effective coding language for mobile web site design than HTML… it displays better, integrates better in all the fancy technical ways, and was really designed more with phones and next-generation devices in mind.  I’m no programmer, but from what I’ve seen, XML coded sites look a LOT cleaner on a phone.

3. Make sure those pages are 25kb or less.

If you want to transcribe War and Peace, make each web page into its own chapter.  If you want to put a couple of images onto a page, make them SMALL – and limit text.  Big pages load slowly on phones, and they display very poorly.  And remember the first part – if they have to scroll for more than a minute, most people won’t.
